A refreshingly asymmetrical FPS with terrific competitive depth, but the thrill of the hunt eventually begins to wane. Evolve is a jetpack dance between prey and predator. Evolve can turn on a dime. Its rhythm differs slightly between map and mode, but generally speaking this is the most compressed multiplayer FPS since Titanfall.
For the four Hunters, Evolve is all about pursuit—of the monster, or a separate map objective—with few moments granted to plot, joke, or catch your breath.

I played Evolve on console, a lot, and am happy to see it come back revitalized here. Sadly however, I really loved playing Evacuation, and not so much the simple hunt the monster modes. Is there a chance it will come back? Oh man. There are more modes? I’d love to see more ways to play the game. As I jumped out of the aircraft into the murky forest again, after a couple hours of a dozen similar jumps, I thought Evolve might be really growing on me. Is this game fun? While it’s a question important for all video games, Evolve ‘s structure of rapid-fire rounds means you’ll be doing a lot of the same things over and over. Does the game’s unique formula have the staying power to keep players coming back?
While I’ll tentatively say yes in these first impressions, I have a plenty of questions to raise about the game moving forward. Evolve is based around a unique premise to multiplayer gaming: four players team up as Hunters to take down one beefed up player, acting as a monster — the final boss from your nightmares. The four players, each occupying a different class with different abilities, must take down the monster or complete a certain objective while keeping it at bay.
The monster’s win condition is the opposite, but usually involves killing all four players as it tries to level up by munching on wildlife found across the maps. Feeding is essential for the monster, as it must go from the weakest state — Level 1 — to an extremely threatening maximum of Level 3 all during the space of one match.

Four scrappy hunters versus one super powered beast. The perpetuation of hunting as a pastime is in itself a validation of the design philosophy of the game; the thrill of the hunt is one that has scarcely been captured in video games before, much less in the hairtrigger realm of the multiplayer shooter. However, a hunt is only as thrilling as its prey and therein lies the big question: Is the balance there? Can one monster truly hope to defeat four hunters?
The quick answer is no. Personally, I came to loathe playing any of the three beasts; what had at one point been a major selling point of Evolve all too often became a justification to put the controller down. When I was a hunter, I found that victories often came fast and easy, even when monsters were playing tactfully, sneaking through the environments, and powering up.
And even though I put the monster class all the way at the back of my preferences list – indicating that I would rather play any class in the game than the monster – I oftentimes found myself thrust into the role against my will, a fact which indicates either that the preferences system is hopelessly broken, or that almost nobody has fun playing as a monster. There is a laundry list of reasons that Evolve is ultimately unbalanced, but in order to best understand them, you must first understand the core conceit of the game.
But the core of Evolve is much more complex than that, and it is this complexity that occasionally redeems the game when it stumbles. See, each of the four hunters plays as a different class. Each class has three characters, each with different weapons and abilities.

Player numbers dwindled soon after its release, and later that year developer Turtle Rock Studios ended support for the game. Now, publisher 2K Games has announced that it plans to pull the plug on a number of its key features. In September, dedicated servers will stop running, which means no more ranked play, no more leaderboards, and no more in-game store.
At the same time, Evolve Stage 2 —the free-to-play branch of the game—will shut down entirely. Players will keep any DLC content they’ve paid for, such as monsters, skins, and hunters.

I’m sitting on the train, en route to the 2K offices in Sydney’s Pyrmont, caught between the thrill of competition and the fear of fatigue. It’s the two dominant thoughts that emerge whenever I think about Evolve these days; the upcoming asymmetrical shooter from Turtle Rock Studios, a team that has developed a knack for multiplayer after working on the iconic Left 4 Dead series.
Evolve’s delay from October last year to February 10 was upsetting, even though it was to avoid getting crowded out by the rush of AAA games flooding to market in the months before Christmas. That was the official line, although it’s hard to see how Evolve’s unique brand of gameplay, which resembles a small-scale raid from an MMO in many ways, would have been challenged by the likes of Civilization: Beyond Earth , The Evil Within, Sunset Overdrive or anything that launched in October.
But the growing question has been not whether Evolve will be fun – I had no doubt about that after EB Expo and sitting amongst the red lights and lavish Alienware PCs in 2K’s Pyrmont offices, I have no doubt still – but whether the repeated intensity of battling the likes of the Goliath and the Kraken will be too much. The fundamentals of Evolve were unchanged in my build: the hunters are split into four classes Medic, Assault, Trapper, Support with individual characters offering alternative loadouts.
The solo player picks the monster of his choice – Wraith, Goliath and the Kraken, although the Behemoth will become available in post-launch DLC – and a starting perk, ranging from faster movement, reduced cooldowns and a better smelling distance. Since its first outing, the combinations of playable monster and hunters have grown significantly but each match, whether it be the one-off Skirmish mode or the five-match long Evacuation game, remains a cat-and-mouse affair.
The hunters want to find the monster within the first or second stages of evolution, while the monster relies on smell, sneaking and bursts of movement to buy time. My preview build came with all the perks and characters unlocked, but players will have to level up their initial offerings in-game before any customisations become available.
